# What benefits can servers get in British Columbia?

**Short answer:** **Enrol in MSP; new residents wait out the rest of the arrival month plus two more.** Register once for Fair PharmaCare, which scales drug help to family income, and since March 1, 2026 Plan NP makes many contraceptives and diabetes drugs free. After 90 days on the job you get 5 paid sick days a year. Vacation pay is 4% of wages but not tips. If you rent, claim the renter’s tax credit.

## The rules in British Columbia

| Rule | What it says |
| --- | --- |
| Health coverage (MSP) | All B.C. residents must enrol. The wait period is the balance of the month you establish residence plus two months. Apply online, at a Service BC location, or on paper. |
| Fair PharmaCare | Helps with prescription drugs, dispensing fees and some supplies, based on family income. After your deductible, PharmaCare pays 70% of eligible costs. Register once online or at 1-800-663-7100. |
| PharmaCare Plan NP | Since March 1, 2026, covers 100% of many diabetes medications, contraceptives and menopausal hormone therapy for MSP enrollees; you pay nothing for fully covered items. |
| Vacation and vacation pay | 2 weeks after 12 months, 3 weeks after 5 years. Vacation pay is at least 4% of wages paid in the previous year (6% after 5 years). You’re not entitled to vacation pay on tips. |
| Statutory holidays | 11 a year, including B.C. Day and the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation (Boxing Day isn’t one). You qualify after 30 calendar days if you worked or earned wages on 15 of them; the pay is an average day’s pay. |
| Illness or injury leave | After 90 days of employment, up to 5 paid days and 3 unpaid days a year. Paid days are paid at an average day’s pay. |
| Family responsibility leave | Up to 5 unpaid days each employment year for the care, health or education of a child under 19. |
| Renter’s tax credit | Up to $400 for 2025 if you rented in B.C. for at least 6 months and are 19 or older. It shrinks above $64,764 of adjusted income and ends at $84,764 ($66,189 and $86,189 for 2026). Claim it on form BC479 with your return. |
| Climate action tax credit | Ended. The April 2025 payment was the final one. |

> “Even though tips are wages (for the purpose of recovering them from an employer), employees are not entitled to vacation pay on tips.” (B.C. Employment Standards: Interpretation guidelines, gratuities (section 30.3), https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/employment-business/employment-standards-advice/employment-standards/forms-resources/igm/esa-part-3-section-30-3)

## What’s different in British Columbia

B.C. is the province here with paid sick days in its employment law: 5 of them, once you’ve been on the payroll 90 days, paid at an average day’s pay. That average is built on wages, and the Branch says tips don’t earn vacation pay, so a server whose income is mostly tips will see those paid days and holidays land well below a normal shift.

On health costs, B.C. was early on free contraception and now funds it through Plan NP, which doesn’t touch your Fair PharmaCare deductible. The old climate action cheque is gone after April 2025, so the credit left for renters is the $400 renter’s credit, claimed on your return. Plus the federal programs, including the dental plan and the workers benefit.

**Still open:** The Fair PharmaCare page doesn’t list deductibles by income; use the province’s estimator. Renter’s credit thresholds change each tax year.
