# Do cash tips and card tips both count for No Tax on Tips?

**Short answer:** **Yes. For the federal qualified tips deduction, “cash tips” is broader than paper bills.** IRS rules treat tips paid by cash, credit or debit card, gift card, and similar cash-like methods as cash tips when they are voluntary and otherwise qualified. Tips employees receive under tip sharing can also count. Service charges and forced app “tips” still don’t. The $25,000 cap, MAGI phase-out, occupation list, reporting, SSN, and joint-filing rules still apply. Claim path: **Schedule 1-A Part II**.

## Example math

Cash tip jar you report: **$5,000**. Card tips on guest checks: **$10,000**. A forced POS “service” add-on: **$800**, which you exclude.

1. Napkin qualified tips ≈ **$15,000** (not $15,800).
2. Under the cap and under the phase-out, so the deduction is **$15,000**.
3. Illustrative federal income-tax savings at **22%** ≈ $15,000 × 0.22 = **$3,300** (illustrative only; enter your own marginal rate).
4. FICA still generally applied to the reported tip amounts.

**Not tax advice.**

## Plain English

### What “cash tips” means here

Under IRC §224 and IRS tip guidance, cash tips include tips paid in a cash medium: bills, cards, apps that work like cash, and similar methods. For employees, they also include amounts received under tip sharing.

### What still doesn’t count

- Mandatory auto-grat and service charges. See [Does an auto-gratuity count as a tip?](https://www.tipmaxapp.com/us/answers/qualified-tips-vs-service-charges)
- Digital prompts that **require** a tip above $0 before you can pay.
- Tips in an occupation **not** on the [IRS tipped occupations list](https://www.irs.gov/TippedOccupations).

## Common mistakes

- Thinking only tip-jar cash qualifies.
- Dumping every card “grat” line into the deduction without checking whether it was voluntary.
- Double-counting [tip-outs](https://www.tipmaxapp.com/us/answers/tip-outs-and-qualified-tips) you passed to someone else.

September 23, 2026. Sources checked: IRS tip recordkeeping page, IRC §224(d)(3), the 2026 General Instructions for Forms W-2 and W-3, Schedule 1-A, and the IRS tipped occupations list. Confirmed: tips paid by cash, card, and similar cash-like methods count as cash tips, and so do tips employees receive under tip sharing.
