# Is it better to get tips on a card or in cash?

**Short answer:** **For taxes, it’s the same.** IRS Publication 531 says all tips are income, whether it’s cash handed to you or card tips your employer pays you, and you report both to your employer. The real difference is the paper trail: card tips leave a charge slip and a payroll record, while cash tips only exist in the record you keep. Card tips can also arrive later, by payday, and may lose the card fee.

## Side by side

| | Cash tips | Card tips |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Income for tax? | Yes | Yes |
| Reported to your employer? | Yes, in any month your tips reach $20 | Yes, in any month your tips reach $20 |
| Record of it | Only your own tip diary | Charge slips and your employer’s payroll |
| When you get it | When you’re handed it | No later than the regular payday |
| Can your employer take a cut? | No | Only the card company’s actual fee |

Say a table leaves a **$20** tip (illustrative). In cash, you have $20 tonight, and it exists only if you write it down. On a card with a 3% processing fee, your employer may pay you $19.40 on payday, and the charge slip is your record. You report the tip either way.

**Not tax or legal advice.** The numbers are made up. Some states don’t allow card fees to come out of tips.

## Plain English

### Same tax treatment

IRS says you include in income all tips you receive directly, charged tips paid to you by your employer, and your share of any tip pool. When you report to your employer, you report cash, check, and debit and credit card tips together. Your employer withholds tax on all the tips you report. Getting paid in cash doesn’t change what you owe.

### The difference is records

IRS says your daily tip record should list cash tips and card tips separately, and that copies of restaurant bills and card charge slips can serve as a record. Card tips already leave that trail. Cash tips don’t. If your return is ever questioned, IRS says your daily record is how you prove your tip income.

A paper trail helps outside taxes too, for example when you need to show your income for an apartment. See [How do I prove my income as a server?](https://www.tipmaxapp.com/us/answers/how-to-prove-income-as-a-server)

### Timing and the card fee

DOL says card tips must be paid to you no later than the regular payday, and can’t be held while your employer waits on the card company. Your employer may take out the card company’s fee, but not more than the actual fee. ### So which is better for you?

It depends on what you need. Cash is in hand tonight and has no fee. Card tips come with a record and land on payday. Either way, the tax is the same, so the habit that matters is writing both down each shift. ## Common mistakes

- Thinking cash tips are “off the books.” IRS counts them the same as card tips.
- Only logging card tips because they’re already on the slip.
- Not knowing whether a card fee comes out of your tips, or how much.
- Spending cash tips before counting them.

TipMax Answers explains public IRS and U.S. Department of Labor guidance in plain English for tipped workers. It is **not tax, legal, or accounting advice**. Federal rules are a floor; your state may add its own tip rules. Confirm with IRS.gov, DOL.gov, your state labor agency, or a qualified professional. TipMax the app helps you track tips and tip-outs; it does not file your taxes or decide tip-pool disputes.
