# Do my tips count toward Social Security?

**Short answer:** **Yes, when they’re reported.** SSA counts cash tips of $20 or more a month from one employer as wages. IRS Publication 531 says reporting tips lets your employer report your correct earnings to Social Security, which affects your benefits if you retire or become disabled. SSA bases your monthly benefit on your average earnings over your working years, so tips that never get reported can mean a smaller check later.

## Example math

Say in 2026 you earn $2,500 in cash wages and $5,500 in tips (illustrative). In 2026, SSA gives one credit for every $1,890 of covered earnings, up to four credits a year ($7,560).

| | Tips reported | Tips never reported anywhere |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Earnings on your Social Security record | $8,000 | $2,500 |
| Credits for 2026 | 4 (the most you can earn) | 1 |
| Earnings counted toward your benefit average | $8,000 | $2,500 |

1. You need 40 credits to qualify for retirement benefits. Fewer credits a year means it takes longer to get there.
2. Past 40, extra credits don’t raise your benefit. Your average earnings over your working years do. Every year with low recorded earnings pulls that average down.

**Not tax or legal advice.** The numbers are made up. Reporting tips also means paying Social Security and Medicare tax on them.

## Plain English

### Tips are wages for Social Security

SSA’s rules say cash tips you get from one employer are wages if they total $20 or more in a calendar month. Tips that count as wages have to be reported, either to your employer or to the IRS on your tax return.

### How your tips get onto your record

You report tips to your employer each month. Your employer withholds Social Security and Medicare on them and includes them on your W-2. SSA says your employer sends it a copy of your W-2, and it uses those reports to record your earnings. Last year’s earnings may not show up until late in the current year.

If you didn’t report some tips to your employer, IRS Form 4137 is how you pay Social Security and Medicare on them with your return. The form says that by filing it, those tips are credited to your Social Security record. See [What happens if I don’t report my cash tips?](https://www.tipmaxapp.com/us/answers/what-happens-if-i-dont-report-cash-tips)

### Allocated tips

SSA says allocated tips don’t count as wages for Social Security unless you report them as extra income to the IRS. See [What are allocated tips?](https://www.tipmaxapp.com/us/answers/allocated-tips-explained)

### Why under-reporting hurts you later

- **Credits.** You need 40 to be eligible for retirement benefits, and disability and survivors benefits have their own credit tests. SSA can’t pay benefits if you don’t have enough credits.
- **Benefit amount.** SSA says your monthly payment is based on the average of your earnings over your working years. Tips left off your record lower that average.
- **Disability and survivors.** IRS says your reported earnings affect your benefits if you become disabled, and your family’s benefits if you die.

### Check your record

SSA encourages you to review your Social Security Statement every year. With a my Social Security account, you can see your earnings history, verify your reported earnings, and find out how to report an error. Compare each year with your W-2s.

## Common mistakes

- Skipping tip reports to keep more of your paycheck now, without counting the cost to your record.
- Assuming allocated tips on your W-2 already count for Social Security.
- Never checking your Social Security Statement for missing years.
- Thinking the number of credits sets your benefit. Your earnings do.
