# How do I budget when I’m paid in tips and my income changes every week?

**Short answer:** **Budget from what you actually earned, not from your best weeks.** The CFPB says irregular income makes it hard to be sure you can cover bills, and that a cash flow budget, which plans week by week when money comes in and when bills are due, matters even more when income is irregular. One way to do it: track a few weeks of pay, plan around a slow week, and set the extra aside on good ones.

## Step by step

Say your last four weeks of wages plus tips you kept were $520, $610, $430, and $700 (illustrative).

| Week | You made | Plan on | Set aside |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 1 | $520 | $430 | $90 |
| 2 | $610 | $430 | $180 |
| 3 | $430 | $430 | $0 |
| 4 | $700 | $430 | $270 |

1. **Track first.** Write down everything you earn and spend for a few weeks. The CFPB suggests a week, two weeks, or a month.
2. **List your bills by due date,** not just by amount. Rent due on the 1st hits a different week than a phone bill due on the 20th.
3. **Pick a baseline.** Here, the slowest recent week, $430. Cover rent, food, and other must-pays from that amount.
4. **Move the extra out of reach** in good weeks. In this example, $540 over four weeks goes to a bill buffer or savings.
5. **Line up bills with your paydays.** The CFPB suggests asking to move due dates, or splitting a monthly payment in two.

**Not tax or legal advice.** The numbers are made up, and the baseline method is one approach, not a rule.

## Plain English

### Why tip income is hard to budget

The CFPB calls income irregular when you can’t predict exactly when you’ll get it or how much. Its point is simple: even when income goes up and down, rent is still due every month. And in a good week it’s easy to spend the extra instead of saving it for a slow one.

### Use a cash flow budget

A regular monthly budget adds up income and bills. A cash flow budget also looks at timing: which week money comes in and which week each bill is due. The CFPB says this matters even more for people with irregular income. It can help you spread good weeks over slow ones.

### Build a small cushion

The CFPB describes an emergency fund as cash set aside for unplanned expenses. It says that if you don’t get paid the same amount each week or month, putting money aside can feel hard, but even a small amount helps. Its suggestions include putting away part of a tax refund and setting up automatic transfers from checking to savings.

### Tips for tipped workers

- Deposit cash tips on a set day each week, so they don’t get spent without being counted.
- Remember card tips may arrive on payday, not the night you earned them. See [When do I get my credit card tips?](https://www.tipmaxapp.com/us/answers/when-do-i-get-my-credit-card-tips)
- If your paycheck is often small or $0 because tax on reported tips comes out of it, plan for that. See [Why is my server paycheck so small?](https://www.tipmaxapp.com/us/answers/server-paycheck-explained)
- Keep the same shift log you keep for taxes. It doubles as your income tracker.

These are practical suggestions, not rules. The CFPB’s free worksheets (an income tracker, a spending tracker, a cash flow budget, and a cash flow calendar) are in its Your Money, Your Goals toolkit.

## Common mistakes

- Budgeting from your best week.
- Treating a big weekend as extra money when it has to cover a slow week later.
- Ignoring when bills are due and planning only by the month.
- Keeping cash tips loose, so you never know what you made.
