# I’m a barista — do tip jars and app tips qualify?

**Short answer:** Baristas appear as an illustrative example under IRS TTOC **107** (Fast food and counter workers). Voluntary tip-jar cash and voluntary card or app tips you report can be **qualified tips** if your occupation is on the list and other rules are met. The federal deduction still caps at **$25,000** with a MAGI phase-out. App flows that **force** a tip greater than zero before paying look like **service charges**, not tips. FICA generally still applies to reported tips.

## Example math

Tip jar (cash you reported): **$4,000**. App and card tips (voluntary): **$5,000**. A forced “service” add-on mislabeled as tips: **$1,200**, which you exclude.

1. Napkin qualified tips ≈ **$9,000** (not $10,200).
2. Under the cap and under the phase-out, so the deduction is **$9,000**.
3. Illustrative federal income-tax savings at **12%** ≈ $9,000 × 0.12 = **$1,080** (illustrative only; enter your own marginal rate).
4. FICA still generally applied to the reported tip amounts.

**Not tax advice.** Always confirm TTOC **107** (or your actual code) on the live IRS table and on your W-2.

## Plain English

### Barista-specific traps

- **QR or app checkout that blocks a $0 tip:** the IRS lists prompts that require a tip above zero as service-charge examples. See [Does an auto-gratuity count as a tip?](https://www.tipmaxapp.com/us/answers/qualified-tips-vs-service-charges)
- **Tip jar shared across shifts:** track what **you** received; don’t guess from the whole jar. Follow your shop’s tip-jar split policy; the IRS hasn’t published a split formula.
- Counter roles that aren’t actually on the [occupations list](https://www.tipmaxapp.com/us/answers/who-qualifies-tipped-occupations): being tipped casually isn’t enough.

## Common mistakes

- Counting delivery “grat” fees set by the platform as tips without checking whether they were voluntary.
- Skipping employer tip reports for tip-jar cash because of a misunderstanding of the [$20-a-month rule](https://www.tipmaxapp.com/us/answers/do-i-have-to-report-tips-to-claim-deduction).
- Expecting TipMax to reclassify forced app tips for the IRS.

## Last verified

September 23, 2026. Sources checked: IRS tipped occupations list, IRS tip recordkeeping page, and Schedule 1-A. Confirmed: baristas are an example under Treasury Tipped Occupation Code 107, and digital prompts that require a tip above zero are service-charge examples.

**Still open:** Shop-specific tip-jar split policies and how platforms label their fees.
