# I’m a bartender — how does tip share and No Tax on Tips work?

**Short answer:** Bartenders are on the IRS tipped occupations list (TTOC **101**). Voluntary tips you **receive**, including tip share from servers, can be qualified tips for the federal deduction if reported and other rules are met. The deduction is still capped at **$25,000** with a MAGI phase-out on Schedule 1-A. Service-bar auto-charges and mandatory “bartending fees” are often **service charges**, not tips. FICA on reported tips generally still applies.

## Example math

Bar tip jar and card tips you retain: **$9,000**. Tip share received from servers: **$6,000**. Total potential qualified tips on a napkin: **$15,000** (if all are voluntary cash tips, your occupation is listed, and they’re reported). Your MAGI is under the phase-out. Your illustrative federal marginal rate is **12%** (illustrative only; enter your own marginal rate).

1. Deduction = **$15,000**.
2. Illustrative federal income-tax savings ≈ $15,000 × 0.12 = **$1,800**.
3. FICA still generally applied to the reported tip wages during the year.

**Not tax advice.** Check how your POS codes tip share versus service-bar fees before you count them; this page can’t reclassify them for the IRS.

## Plain English

### Bartender-specific traps

- A **service well or “auto bartending fee”** on banquet checks is often a service charge. See [Does an auto-gratuity count as a tip?](https://www.tipmaxapp.com/us/answers/qualified-tips-vs-service-charges)
- **Tip share in versus tip share out:** claim what you receive, and don’t double-count with servers. See [Tip-outs and qualified tips](https://www.tipmaxapp.com/us/answers/tip-outs-and-qualified-tips).
- Dual role (bartender plus barback helper duties): confirm your TTOC(s) in W-2 box **14b** (2026).

## Common mistakes

- Treating every “grat” line on a banquet BEO as tips.
- Ignoring [Form 4137](https://www.tipmaxapp.com/us/answers/form-4137-unreported-tips-and-deduction) if you under-reported cash tip jar amounts.
- Assuming tip share automatically shows up correctly in [W-2 box 12 code **TP**](https://www.tipmaxapp.com/us/answers/w2-box-12-code-tp-explained).

## Last verified

September 23, 2026. Sources checked: IRS tipped occupations list, IRS tip recordkeeping page, and the 2026 General Instructions for Forms W-2 and W-3. Confirmed: bartenders are Treasury Tipped Occupation Code 101, and tip share you receive counts as your cash tips.
