# Does an auto-gratuity or service charge count as a tip for the deduction?

**Short answer:** **Usually no.** The IRS says **service charges** (including many **auto-gratuities**) are **not tips**. A tip is generally a payment the **customer voluntarily decides to pay** and **sets the amount of**. Mandatory percentages for large parties, required “gratuities” in a contract, or payment flows that **force** a tip above zero are treated as **service charges or wages**, not qualified tips for the deduction. Extra money a guest **chooses** to add on top can still be a tip.

## Example math

Banquet check: the house adds an **18% auto-grat** = **$90** on a $500 event. The guest also writes in an extra **$20**.

1. **$90** auto-grat → generally **not** a qualified tip (it’s a service charge, treated as wages).
2. **$20** voluntary add-on → may be a **tip** if truly voluntary and otherwise qualified.
3. Only the tip portion belongs in your “qualified tips” napkin math for Schedule 1-A, not the whole $110.

**Not tax advice.** Facts and circumstances matter; your paystub labels are not the final word.

## Plain English

### The IRS test

A payment is a tip only if the customer **voluntarily** pays it and **sets the amount**. If the restaurant **requires** 18% for parties of 6+, that required amount is a **service charge**, even if your manager calls it a tip.

Suggested tip lines (15/18/20%) with a **blank tip line** the guest can leave empty are different: those voluntary amounts can still be tips.

### Why servers care

Banquets, delivery fees labeled “gratuity,” resort fees, and some POS prompts that **block** a $0 tip can shrink what counts as **qualified tips**, even when the money hits your pocket or tip pool.

### Digital prompts

IRS guidance gives digital prompts that **require** selecting a tip greater than zero before paying as an example of a service-charge-like design. If your shop’s QR flow forces a tip, ask management how it’s coded for payroll, and keep your own notes.

## Common mistakes

- Dumping all banquet “grat” into the deduction.
- Assuming the word “tip” on a paycheck equals “qualified tip.”
- Forgetting tip-outs: money you tip out may be part of someone else’s tip income. Report the tips you **receive and retain**, and follow your house’s written tip policy; the IRS hasn’t published pool-allocation formulas for every setup. ## Last verified

September 23, 2026. Sources checked: the service-charge section of the IRS tip recordkeeping page and Revenue Ruling 2012-18. Confirmed: service charges are not tips; a voluntary add-on can qualify; the IRS examples on forced tip prompts and suggested tips with a blank line.

**Still open:** How specific POS prompt designs and tip-pool allocations are treated can depend on your workplace’s setup, and the IRS hasn’t published outcomes for every case.
