# I’m self-employed (stylist, rideshare) — can I take the tip deduction?

**Short answer:** **Possibly, but self-employed workers face extra limits the TipMax calculator doesn’t compute.** The IRS tip page describes a **net-income** limit and **specified service trade or business (SSTB)** rules, with transition relief noted there. You still need a listed tipped occupation, voluntary cash tips, proper reporting, an SSN, and, if married, a joint return. You claim on **Schedule 1-A Part II**; the $25,000 cap and MAGI phase-out still apply. Self-employment tax is separate.

## Example math

Employee-style ballpark (for contrast only): **$10,000** qualified tips, under the phase-out, illustrative **22%** rate → ≈ **$2,200** federal income-tax savings.

Self-employed ballpark: **don’t trust that $2,200** until the net-income and SSTB limits are applied under IRS rules. TipMax will not invent those formulas.

**Not tax advice.**

> Still being verified: SSTB transition relief end date and final regulation timing, before any detailed self-employed how-to.

## Plain English

### What’s the same

- Your occupation must be on the [IRS tipped occupations list](https://www.irs.gov/TippedOccupations) (customarily received tips on or before Dec. 31, 2024).
- Voluntary cash tips only; [service charges are out](https://www.tipmaxapp.com/us/answers/qualified-tips-vs-service-charges).
- **$25,000** cap and MAGI phase-out on Schedule 1-A Part II.
- Joint filing if married; valid SSN.

### What’s different

IRS materials describe additional limits for self-employed individuals: a net-income limit, and SSTB rules with transition relief. The TipMax calculator doesn’t compute these limits, and TipMax Answers won’t publish invented SSTB math.

## Common mistakes

- Running the employee calculator and filing that number.
- Assuming rideshare “tips” always meet the occupation test. Confirm the live IRS list.
- Ignoring information-return and 1099 reporting paths.

## Last verified

September 23, 2026. IRS tip recordkeeping page, IRS tipped occupations list, Schedule 1-A, and the final regulations in the Federal Register. Confirmed: self-employed individuals face extra limits (net income; SSTB with transition relief). This page covers them at a high level only.

**Still open:** The end date for SSTB transition relief, and the timing of final SSTB regulations, is not settled on this page. Check the IRS tip page before relying on detailed self-employed guidance.

TipMax Answers explains public IRS guidance in plain English for tipped workers. It is **not tax, legal, or accounting advice**. Rules can change. Confirm figures on IRS.gov and with a qualified tax professional before you file. TipMax the app helps you track tips and true hourly pay; it does not file your taxes. The TipMax calculator does not compute self-employed SSTB or net-income limits.
