# What will they ask me in a server interview, and how should I answer?

**Short answer:** **Be ready to talk about a busy section, an upset guest, a mistake you fixed, and your availability.** Answer with a short, real example: what happened, what you did, how it ended. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics lists communication, customer service, attention to detail, and physical stamina and strength as important server qualities, so show those. No serving experience? Use examples from any job, school, or team.

## Questions and sample answers

These are questions to prepare for, not a list any restaurant is required to use. Sample answers are illustrative; use your own true examples.

| Question | What they’re checking | A sample answer |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Why do you want to work here? | That you know the place | “I’ve eaten here twice and liked how the staff helped each other during a rush. I want to work somewhere like that.” |
| Tell me about a time you were really busy. | Staying calm, keeping orders straight | “At the coffee shop the line hit the door every Saturday. I kept the tickets in order, called out drinks as they were ready, and asked for help before I fell behind.” |
| A guest says their steak is overcooked. What do you do? | Customer service | “Apologize, take the plate, ask how they’d like it, tell the kitchen right away, and tell the manager. Then check back when the new one lands.” |
| Tell me about a mistake you made. | Honesty, fixing it | “I rang in a burger without the no-onion note. I caught it when it came up, told the kitchen, and got a new one out. Now I read every modifier back.” |
| A guest asks if a dish has nuts. What do you say? | Allergen care | “I don’t guess. I check the allergen chart or ask the kitchen, and I flag the order the way the restaurant wants.” |
| What’s your availability? | Whether your schedule fits theirs | “Weeknights after 4, and all day Saturday and Sunday. I can pick up on short notice.” |
| How would you sell a dessert? | Sales without pushing | “Mention one by name before they ask for the check: ‘The lemon tart is really good tonight if you saved room.’” |
| Do you have questions for us? | Interest | “How long is training? How are tips paid out, and is there a tip-out or pool?” |

**Not tax or legal advice.** This is interview advice, not a promise of a job offer.

## Plain English

### What the job is, according to BLS

The Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Occupational Outlook Handbook says servers typically greet customers, explain specials and answer menu questions, take food and drink orders, relay orders to the kitchen (such as through a point-of-sale system), carry trays, check on customers, clear tables, take payment, and set up and stock service areas. Interview questions tend to map onto those tasks, so think of one example for each.

### The qualities to show

| Quality BLS lists | What BLS says it means | How to show it in an interview |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Communication | Listen to customers, ask questions, relay information to the kitchen | Answer clearly and ask a question back |
| Customer service | Be friendly and polite and build rapport | Smile, make eye contact, be warm with the host too |
| Detail oriented | Record orders accurately and match them to the right guests | Mention how you keep orders straight |
| Physical stamina and strength | Stand and walk most of a shift, lift and carry trays | Mention past on-your-feet work |

### Availability matters

BLS says part-time work is common for servers and schedules may include early mornings, late evenings, weekends, and holidays. Know your real availability before you walk in, and be honest about it. Weekend availability is worth saying out loud if you have it.

### Questions to ask them

- How long is training, and is it paid?
- What’s the cash wage, and how are card tips paid out?
- Is there a tip-out or tip pool, and how much is it?
- How are sections and shifts assigned?
- What does side work look like?

Under federal law, required training counts as work time, and if you’re paid a tipped cash wage, your employer has to tell you about the tip credit and any required tip pool contribution. ### If you’ll serve alcohol

BLS says most states require workers who serve alcohol to be at least 18, and some require servers to be older. If you’re close to that age, check the rule before the interview.

## Common mistakes

- Giving a general answer (“I’m a people person”) with no example.
- Guessing about allergens in a role-play question.
- Overstating your availability, then turning down shifts.
- Not asking how tips and tip-outs work.
