# If I tip out bussers or the bar, whose tips count for the deduction?

**Short answer:** **Generally, the person who receives and keeps the tip money reports those tips, and only that person’s qualified tips can support their deduction.** Cash tips for the federal deduction include amounts employees receive under **tip-sharing** arrangements. If you **tip out** part of what you collected, you typically report only what you **receive and retain**; the busser or barback reports what they receive. Service charges and auto-gratuities still aren’t tips for anyone. Occupation, reporting, SSN, and joint-filing rules still apply.

## Example math

You collect **$1,000** in card tips on a shift. Your house tip-out policy sends **$200** to bussers and the bar.

1. You retain **$800**. That portion is generally **your** tip income to report (and potentially your qualified tips, if the other rules are met).
2. The busser receives **$200** through the tip share. That is generally **their** tip income and potential qualified tips (if their occupation is listed and the tips are reported).
3. You and the busser do **not** both claim the same $1,000 as qualified tips.

**Not tax advice.** House tip-pool policies and shifts that span more than one occupation depend on facts and circumstances. Follow your house’s written tip policy; the IRS hasn’t published pool-allocation formulas for every setup.

## Plain English

### What IRS guidance supports

- Tips include amounts received through **tip pools and tip sharing**, including for indirectly tipped workers (IRS tip recordkeeping page).
- For employees, “cash tips” include tips received under any tip-sharing arrangement (IRC §224(d)(3); General Instructions for Forms W-2 and W-3).
- Classic employee tip reporting: report the tips you receive, and don’t report amounts you pass on to other employees (Publication 531).

### What still trips people up

- Banquet auto-gratuity “tip-outs” that are actually **service charges** are not qualified tips. See [Does an auto-gratuity count as a tip?](https://www.tipmaxapp.com/us/answers/qualified-tips-vs-service-charges)
- Tip-outs to workers whose occupation is **not** on the [IRS tipped occupations list](https://www.irs.gov/TippedOccupations).
- Double-counting the same dollars on two people’s Schedule 1-A.

Who your employer can require you to share with, and which number you report, is covered in [Tip-outs and tip pools](https://www.tipmaxapp.com/us/answers/tip-outs).

## Common mistakes

- Claiming the full pre-tip-out total as your qualified tips.
- Assuming a tip-out makes the recipient eligible automatically, without checking the occupation list.
- Skipping daily records of tip-outs.

## Last verified

September 23, 2026. Sources checked: IRS tip recordkeeping page, IRC §224(d)(3), and the 2026 General Instructions for Forms W-2 and W-3. Confirmed: tips received through tip sharing count as the recipient’s cash tips, and you report the tips you receive and retain.

**Still open:** House tip-pool formulas, shifts that span more than one tipped occupation, and tip-outs to workers whose occupation isn’t on the IRS list depend on facts and circumstances. This page doesn’t state IRS outcomes for those cases.
