# A guest tipped me on Venmo (or Cash App). Does that count as a tip I have to report?

**Short answer:** Yes. The IRS says cash tips include tips paid by check, card, and **any other form of electronic settlement or mobile payment application** that’s denominated in cash, so a Venmo or Cash App tip is a cash tip. Report it to your employer with your other cash tips if your tips at that job reach $20 in a month, and include it on your tax return. Whether the app sends you a Form 1099-K doesn’t change that.

## Example: one month of tips

Say in March you took home $900 in paper cash tips, and regulars sent you $150 in tips through a payment app. Your employer paid out your card tips through payroll. Amounts are illustrative.

| Tip | Where it goes on your monthly tip report |
| --- | --- |
| Paper cash from guests | $900: report |
| Tips sent to you on a payment app | $150: report, same as cash |
| Card tips your employer paid you | Already in your employer’s records; follow your employer’s tip report form |
| **Cash tips to report for March** | **$1,050**, due to your employer by April 10 |

The IRS says to give your employer each month’s report by the 10th of the next month; if the 10th is a weekend or legal holiday, it’s due the next business day. **Not tax or legal advice.**

## Plain English

### Why an app tip is a cash tip

On its tip recordkeeping page, the IRS defines cash tips as tips paid in cash or a cash medium of exchange, including checks, credit cards, debit cards, gift cards, and any other form of electronic settlement or mobile payment application that’s denominated in cash. So for tax purposes, a tip that lands in your payment app is treated like bills in your apron.

The same page says employees must report all cash tips to their employer in a written statement unless their tips at that employer are under $20 for the month, and must report all tips on their federal tax return. Publication 531 says to keep a daily record of the cash tips you get directly from customers.

### What about Form 1099-K?

Payment apps send Form 1099-K for payments for goods or services. As of the IRS page reviewed June 28, 2026, the IRS says apps must report on Form 1099-K when your payments for goods or services on the platform **exceed $20,000 in more than 200 transactions**. The IRS also says money from friends and family as a gift or repayment for a personal expense shouldn’t be reported on a 1099-K.

- **No 1099-K doesn’t mean no tax.** The IRS says to report all income on your return. Your app tips count whether or not a form arrives.
- **Got a 1099-K you think is wrong?** The IRS says to contact the issuer named under “Filer” on the form and ask for a corrected one.
- **Don’t count the same tips twice.** App tips you reported to your employer are already in W-2 box 1. Keep your tip log to show which app payments were tips you already reported.

### The new federal tip deduction

Because app tips are cash tips, they can count toward the new federal tip deduction if they meet the other rules and you reported them. See [Cash tips vs card tips for the deduction](https://www.tipmaxapp.com/us/answers/cash-tips-vs-credit-card-tips-deduction) and [Do I have to report tips to claim it?](https://www.tipmaxapp.com/us/answers/do-i-have-to-report-tips-to-claim-deduction).

Your employer may have its own rules about taking tips on a personal app. Those are workplace policy, not a tax rule.

## Common mistakes

- Leaving app tips off your monthly report because they didn’t go through the register.
- Assuming no 1099-K means the IRS doesn’t care.
- Reporting the same app tips on your return twice, once from your W-2 and again from a 1099-K.
- Mixing personal repayments and tips in the same app with no notes. Label tips when they come in.

None of the IRS pages we read say how to show, on your return, app tips that are on both a W-2 and a 1099-K; ask a tax professional if that happens to you.

TipMax Answers explains public IRS and U.S. Department of Labor guidance in plain English for tipped workers. It is **not tax, legal, or accounting advice**. Federal rules are a floor; your state may add its own tip rules. Confirm with IRS.gov, DOL.gov, your state labor agency, or a qualified professional. TipMax the app helps you track tips and tip-outs; it does not file your taxes or decide tip-pool disputes.
