What benefits can servers get in Manitoba?

The short answer
In Manitoba
| Health coverage (Manitoba Health) | Moving from another province, apply within three months; coverage starts the first day of the third month after you arrive. You must make your home in Manitoba and be here 183 days a year. Register online and upload your documents. |
|---|---|
| Pharmacare | For anyone eligible for Manitoba Health whose prescriptions aren’t covered by another provincial or federal program, at any age. You pay a yearly deductible set from family income (minimum $100); after that Pharmacare pays 100% of eligible prescriptions until March 31. The 2026/2027 deductible uses 2024 income, and one enrolment carries over each year. |
| Manitoba Enhanced Pharmacare Program | Since April 15, 2025, most birth control, diabetes, HIV prevention and treatment, and hormone replacement medications cost nothing if you have an active Manitoba Health card and no 100% coverage elsewhere. No Pharmacare deductible applies. |
| Rent Assist | A monthly shelter benefit for low-income renters in private housing, including people who work. Net annual income must be under $29,120 for a single person or $38,720 for two. Not available on a work or study permit. You must claim rent on your taxes every year. |
| Renters Affordability Tax Credit | For people who rent their home in Manitoba: up to $575 for the 2025 tax year and up to $625 for 2026, claimed on your return. |
| Vacation and vacation pay | You earn it from your first day. Two weeks after each of the first four years, three weeks after five years. Vacation pay is 4% of gross wages (6% with three weeks), paid on each cheque or at vacation time. |
| General holidays | Nine a year, with no minimum service. If your hours vary, holiday pay is 5% of gross wages, not counting overtime, from the 4 weeks before. Work it and you normally get 1½ times pay plus holiday pay. |
| Family leave (sick days) | Three unpaid days a year for your own illness or family needs, after 30 days with the employer. They don’t carry over. |
| Long-term leave for serious injury or illness | Up to 27 weeks in a 52-week period, with your job protected, after 90 days with the same employer, if the illness keeps you off work at least two weeks. |
“Pharmacare is a drug benefit program for eligible Manitobans, regardless of disease or age, whose income is seriously affected by high prescription drug costs.” (Manitoba: About the Manitoba Pharmacare Program)

What’s different in Manitoba
Manitoba doesn’t cut prescription help off at an age or limit it to one illness. Pharmacare works like a yearly ceiling: once what you’ve spent at the pharmacy reaches your income-based deductible, the rest of the benefit year is paid in full. If your income drops by more than 10% this year, you can ask to have the deductible adjusted, which matters in a slow season.
Restaurants get one exception on holidays. Instead of 1½ times pay for working one, a restaurant can pay your regular wage and give you another day off with holiday pay within 30 days. Sick days here are only the 3 unpaid family-leave days. Renters should look at both Rent Assist and the renters credit, which are separate. On top of all this sit the national programs, such as EI sickness benefits and the Canadian Dental Care Plan.
