The short answer

If your restaurant has no drug plan, register for Family Pharmacare: it has no premium and costs nothing unless you fill prescriptions. Your share is capped each year by family size and income. The Labour Standards Code gives 4% vacation pay, six paid holidays if you qualify, and 5 unpaid sick days a year. File your taxes to get the Affordable Living Tax Credit, paid quarterly.

What’s different in Nova Scotia

Nova Scotia’s Labour Standards Code lists only six paid holidays, with Remembrance Day handled by a separate law. The qualifying test is about being entitled to pay on 15 of the previous 30 days, not about working them, and a day you weren’t scheduled doesn’t count against you. Restaurants that normally open on Sundays and holidays may count as a continuous operation, which lets the employer pay straight time for a holiday worked and give you another paid day off instead.

Vacation pay steps up to 6% at the start of your eighth year, and vacation time to three weeks in your ninth. Family Pharmacare is worth joining as a safety net, since it costs nothing until you need it. Beyond these, the federal benefits apply as well, like the Canada Workers Benefit.
