My W-2 is missing my tips (nothing in box 7). What do I do?

The short answer

First, check whether the tips are really missing. Tips you reported to your employer belong in box 1 with your wages and in box 7, and on 2026 forms their cash-tip total shows in box 12 with code TP. If your reported tips aren’t there, ask your employer for a corrected W-2. If it hasn’t arrived by the end of February, call the IRS. Tips you never reported go on Form 4137.

Step by step

Say your tip log shows you reported $14,000 in tips to your employer last year, but box 7 on your W-2 is blank (illustrative).

  1. Check the boxes. Box 1 should include wages plus reported tips. Box 7 should show the tips you reported. On 2026 W-2s, box 12 code TP shows the total cash tips you reported. Box 8 (allocated tips) is separate and not in box 1.
  2. Compare to your records. Line the W-2 up against your monthly tip reports or tip log. Know the number you think is right before you call.
  3. Ask your employer for a corrected W-2. Give them the number and your records. A corrected W-2 is a Form W-2c.
  4. Still nothing by the end of February? Call the IRS at 800-829-1040. Have your name, address, birthdate and Social Security number, plus your employer’s name, address and, if you have it, its EIN. The IRS will contact your employer and send you Form 4852 with instructions.
  5. Filing deadline getting close? You can file with Form 4852, a substitute W-2. You estimate your wages and the tax withheld and report them on it.
  6. A corrected W-2 comes after you filed and doesn’t match your estimate? File an amended return, Form 1040-X.

Tips you never reported to your employer are a different case. They won’t be on your W-2 at all. You add them to your income and figure Social Security and Medicare on them with Form 4137. Not tax or legal advice.

Plain English

Where tips belong on a W-2

BoxWhat the IRS instructions say goes there
Box 1Wages, tips and other pay, including total tips you reported to your employer (not allocated tips)
Box 7Social Security tips: the tips you reported, even if your employer couldn’t collect all the Social Security tax on them
Box 8Allocated tips from a large food or beverage business. Not included in boxes 1, 3, 5 or 7
Box 12, code TPTotal cash tips you reported to your employer (new on 2026 W-2s)
Box 12, codes A and BSocial Security and Medicare on your tips that your employer couldn’t collect
Box 14bTreasury Tipped Occupation Code

So if box 7 is blank but box 1 is bigger than your hourly pay alone, your tips may be in box 1 without being broken out. That still needs fixing, because box 7 is where your tips count as Social Security tips. See What is W-2 box 12 code TP? and Treasury tipped occupation code.

Reported tips vs tips you never reported

IRS Publication 531 says the tips you reported to your employer are already in box 1. You add to box 1 only the tips you didn’t report. For those, Form 4137 figures the Social Security and Medicare you owe. The IRS says to use Form 4137 only for tips you didn’t report to your employer, including allocated tips you must report as income. See Form 4137 and unreported tips.

Why it matters beyond this year

Box 7 is where the W-2 shows your tips as Social Security tips. If your reported tips never make it onto a W-2, check your Social Security earnings record later (see Do tips count toward Social Security?).

The new federal tip deduction also starts from tips shown on your W-2 or Form 4137, so a W-2 with no tips on it makes that deduction harder to claim (see How to claim Schedule 1-A).

Common mistakes

  • Filing with a W-2 you know is wrong without asking for a correction first.
  • Calling the IRS before the end of February, before your employer has had a chance to fix it.
  • Using Form 4137 for tips you did report. Those belong on the W-2.
  • Not keeping copies of your monthly tip reports. They’re your proof.
