What’s different in Alaska
Under federal law a restaurant can pay you as little as $2.13 an hour and lean on your tips to reach $7.25. Alaska shuts that door. The DOL table lists no maximum tip credit here at all, and it puts Alaska on the short list of places that require tipped workers to get the full minimum before tips.
On a paycheck, that means your hourly line should never show less than $14.00, whether the dining room was packed or empty. A slow Tuesday doesn’t drag your base down, and a big Saturday doesn’t let your employer pay you less per hour.
Because the base is fixed, the part of your income that swings is the tips. If you want to know what a shift was really worth, keep your own log of cash and card tips next to your hours so you can see which days pay off.
Example shift
Say you work 6 hours and walk out with $120 in tips (illustrative numbers; use your own).
- Wages: $14.00 × 6 = $84.00.
- With tips: $84.00 + $120 = $204.00, or $34.00 an hour.
